Re: Question for Charlie Miller or anyone else in the know |
If Charlie says he doesn't want anyone messing with his work I think we should abide by his wishes. I would hate to see the work of a few people ruin it for all. Now that being said, I personally requested the matrix of 9-21-82 because I felt it would improve the overall recording. Here's a case where Jerry was very low in the mix, which is a deal breaker for me, and the matrix helped bring him out. I think the sick bits series worked that way as well- the sum of the parts worked better than the whole. But if Charlie is pulling the plug, than I'll permanently pass on a matrix. I guess we're just spoiled with all of the amazing music.

Charlie is right, the only thing worse than a noisy audience recording is your average matrix!

Nice! Someone else knows the plural of "matrix". Now a harder one: "magnum opus".

I also thought "magnum opi" when that question was originally posed to me and was shocked to find that a Latin word that ended in "-us" was not made plural by simply changing it to an "i".

I actually understand it too. Whose fault was it that that retard Starr didn't know how frame a question correctly?

Duke Law - Like I always say, I learned legal ethics and Constitutional Law at the same place as Ken Starr and Dick Nixon. My mama is so proud.....

Objection. Assumes facts not in evidence.
FYI, not to be a total ass, but just scored Row A tix for Wilco. Signed up for their presale account. More importantly, the cost was $39.50 per ticket. Not as cheap as a club show (thought cheaper than some), I reckon that in today's marketplace that is pretty damn reasonable for a band of their caliber.
Here's a recent clip:

Re: Matrices suck ass! |
maybe conjecture but considering the kind of law you do I'd say you pass the ethics test
right on. It'll be great, they always are. i don't think you can get much cheaper with seeing someone that good. I think fans should just consider themselves lucky that they still can play small venues which frankly they should by all acounts be huge imo.
Hey have you heard about their album coming out in june? Apparently has a female vocalist from Canada ( whose name I forgot ) that is supposedly pretty good. For as egotystical as Tweedy supposedly is he sure seems to put the music first in my opinion.

Re: Matrices suck ass! |
Until maybe this last Month I thought their setlists were getting a little stale and when I saw them I didn't particularily care for their two new songs ( which isn't saying much because sometimes their sound is so layed it takes me a couple of listens until I truly get it )but I see recentely they're mixing it up good again. I think it sounds like another fresh start for them by bringing in another vocalist. Can't wait to hear it. I love the way they're constantly reinventing themselves.

Re: Question for Charlie Miller or anyone else in the know |
Oh, hey, I understand...but it still sounds like blackmail to me.
Now, you can say if we are in the free market, and selling (Miller) and buying (us), then it could be copyright violation, etc., etc.
I may be stretching the analogy, but it seems to me that anything Miller does is "free" by virtue of the arrangement provided by the band, etc. Thus, he does one thing with the product, BUT by so doing, he clearly doesn't own it, in the sense that this blackmail suggests.
Right? It is not HIS. So, if he can say, "I don't like anyone doing X with my product" why can't he say "you can't turn my flawless, FLACs into MP3 either!"?
Now, this is really just an argument about the principles behind it, as like CLIFF, personally, other than 9-19-70, I don't typically see the advantage of a mtrx (though others do clearly, like SDH et al.).
But, at least for the moment, I don't think this feels right. He has been granted a privilege of access by the band, and to say that whatever he does with it cannot be changed in any way, I think, infringes on that privilege provided by the band.
Sorry, but that's the way I see it...And again, frankly, personally, I would be pissed if I were he, cause I would think what I made was really special, and I wouldn't want anyone fuckin with it, BUT that doesn't mean this is the right response given how this is informally worked out vis-a-vis the band. It is just an artistic creation, and you know, Betty or whomever originally set up the tape deck could say the EXACT same thing to Mr. Miller, right?
